Drabble: New Season

Yay, it's up and running!

Title: Hanging on in Quiet Desperation Is the English Way
Author: Beer Good (beer_good_foamy)
Rating: PG13
Word Count: 100
Prompt: New Season (001)
Characters: Willow, Giles

"I've brought you an extra blanket." He put it by her bed. "English summers might be colder than you're used to. I'm afraid my countrymen never understood the value of double glazing..."

She just stared into the wall. He fought off a deep-rooted reflex to offer her a cup of tea and turned to leave.

"Giles?" It was the first thing she'd said since they left California. "W-will it... be quick?"

"I'm afraid not. Do you think it should be?"

Willow shook her head.

He was halfway out the door before he realized that she wasn't talking about being rehabilitated.

awwwhh *sniffles* thanks! this is beautifully bittersweet. Can I read it on my Giles episode on my podcast?
Thanks! And I'd be honoured if you want to read it, so go right ahead.
awww i mean there isn't a lot i can say, i mean i know about the weather but awwwwww
Thanks, glad you liked!
I really love that last line because I think, like most of your writing, you can read so much into it. It could be taken in so many different directions, depending on the reader, and that is the sign of a great writer.
Thanks! That's great praise indeed - I'm a firm believer in the idea that the reader adds as much to a piece of writing as the writer does.
Wow that was very nice and perfect for that time for Willow. Poor her for thinking she was going to be executed.
...and thinking she deserved to be. Thanks!
Awww! *sniffle, sniffle* Poor Willow!! I loved it, very nicely done. You've captured Giles really well, too...he's one of the charas I can't seem to grasp for some reason :| But you did great!
Giles can be tricky, I agree - there's so much of him that is Tony Head's doing rather than the writers', and it's difficult to capture. Thanks!
First of all, the cut tag almost killed me.

This is perfect for Willow at that time. I have always loved the dynamic between Giles/Willow and you really captured it so perfectly here.

Heh, it's the closest I'll ever come to writing Harry Potter fic... ;-) Thanks! And I agree, Willow's and Giles' relationship is always interesting to explore.
Good drabble. It has it's own melancholy sweetness, and emotional punch too. You captured the tone of their relationship very well.
Thanks! Willow and Giles were always pretty close, and watching that unravel during s6 is really painful... and I love those scenes with them in England.
Really sweet and sad. Great drabble.
Poor Willow!

it's good to see you back that is, if you've been gone. You seem to have been but then so have I so I wouldn't really know
Thanks! Though I don't think I've been gone... then again, if I had been *really* gone I wouldn't know that I had been gone, would I? Unless I was pulled out of heaven or anything, but I don't think so... ;-)
Beautifully understated! You really got the max out of very few words. Lovely.
Thanks a lot!

I know this is a little late, but I was exploring Still Grrr and thought I'd check out your past drabbles. I realised I'd never left a comment at the time and decided that this wonderful fic deserved at least that.

I remember getting a shiver down my spine when I read the last couple of lines. Way creepy and a little scary in the way of 'what may have been'; it's also hard not to think that, whether or not you think Willow deserved to die, that the thought that maybe she was too dangerous to keep alive must have crossed Giles' mind (also Buffy's mind I imagine).

Anyway I printed it up to add to my permanent collection, and I've re-read it at least a couple of dozen times. It still makes me shiver.

Magnificent work dude, you're a star in the Buffy fanfic firmament.

Thanks a lot! (Blushing now.) I've been trying to expand this into something longer detailing Giles & Willow's time in England (not that original, I know, but still) and reviews like these definitely prod my muse. :-)

the thought that maybe she was too dangerous to keep alive must have crossed Giles' mind (also Buffy's mind I imagine).

Oh, definitely. Willow's, too. As a matter of fact, one could probably draw a parallel between Giles' belief in Willow and Buffy's defense of Spike in s7... but that's meta territory and I'll stay away from it for now.
nice...but, forgive my dumbness...what *was* she talking about?

From "Lessons":

WILLOW: When you brought me here, I thought it was to kill me, or to lock me in some mystical dungeon for all eternity or... with the torture.

Essentially, Willow is asking Giles if her death will be quick. He thinks she's asking about rehabilitation, and says no, it's going to take time. She hears "you're going to die slowly and painfully for what you did" and doesn't feel she has any right to object. It's... not the happiest drabble I've written.
