Prompt 020 Ficlet

Title: You Want Happy Ending?
Author: xlivvielockex
Rating: PG
Word Count: 648
Prompt: 020: Free for All
Characters/Pairing (if any): Xander/Anya
A/N: Sooooooooo not up for voting. AU take on Chosen. Character death.

“Anya! ANYA!” Xander shouted as he moved through the rapidly collapsing school. He was trying to move whomever he saw towards the front of the school and to safety. He couldn’t leave Anya behind. He had to at least try.

“Xander?” Anya called out, trying to push the Bringer off her as well as avoid the falling ceiling. “Over here! Can’t you see me! I am right here, under this hulking corpse of a Bringer!”

Xander heard the sound of her voice and ran as fast as he could to her. He used a strength one only possesses in life or death situations to haul the body off her. “Where’s the geek?”

“Cut in half, over there. He fought like a girl, and I don’t mean that in the Slayer sort of way.”

Xander reached down with his hand to grab hers, pulling her up. “We got to move, Ahn. The whole school is coming down.”

“I can see that. I told you that you shouldn’t have gotten that lumber from the lumber yard on the outskirts of town.”

“You can yell at me about lumber later.” Xander almost pulled her off her feet as he ran with her towards the front of the school. He glanced behind him, once, twice, three times, looking for Buffy. Nothing.

“She’ll make it. She always does. It is her thing, remember? One girl, blah blah, stops the world from ending.” Anya mused.

“Ahn, seriously, less talking, more running for our lives from collapsing drywall.”

It was a welcome relief to hit the sun and the fresh air outside the school. They joined the beeline for the bus and once there, he pushed her onboard. For once, she didn’t protest, but he was pretty sure he was going to hear about it later.

Xander boarded the bus as quickly as possibly, throwing himself onto a seat. He looked at the window. Had Anya, that was a plus. Now if Buffy would just come running out the door.

“I told you, she will come. You have to learn to trust me.” Anya sat down next to him. It was only then that he noticed her clothes were bloody and she had a gash across her forehead. He looked around the bus. Nobody else was better off. Everyone was pretty well banged up.

Before he knew it, the bus was moving and no sign of Buffy. Well, he told her if anything happened, he’d just bring her back again. Deep down inside, he meant it. It was then that he felt something against his hand. Warm and soft. He looked down, Anya’s hand in his, and she was oddly silent.

When the bus stopped and they all piled out to survey the damage, he felt a wash of relief to see Buffy standing there. Coupled with the relief of having Anya holding his hand, the Hellmouth destroyed, and the world open to a whole lot more possibilities, he was feeling pretty damn good. Despite not having any depth perception.

“Well, are we going to get moving or not?” Anya spoke only minutes after leaving the bus. “These girls need medical attention and I need a shower, some new clothes.”

“How about letting us enjoy the moment? Just closed the Hellmouth, think that deserves a bit of light hearted ‘Yay!’” Xander said, slightly aside to Anya.

“Well, that explains Buffy’s smile. She is probably glad that she won’t have to do all the work alone. She can assign her little army to go out while she goes shoe shopping.”

“Or maybe she is just happy about saving the world?”

“No, I think it is the shoes. She has that thing, you know, with the shoes. She has some nice ones.”

Xander grinned, putting an arm around Anya and pulling her close. He didn’t say another word as they just stood there, marveling at this success.

Wouldn't she just act exactly like that?!?! Wonderfully in-voice. Laughed out loud about Andrew...*feels a bit mean*

Thanks for giving Anya a different ending!
Love how you caught Anya's voice here!

It's the shoes: definitely the shoes.

Love the line:
“He fought like a girl, and I don’t mean that in the Slayer sort of way.”

Great job. Nice mix of the sweet and salty.
*double sniff*

*stamps with squealling happy ending fan seal of approval* Love it!
Excellent Anya voice!
It took me a long time to get over Anya. You're really messing with my equilibrium here...

Nice work.
Yay, you saved Anya! Lovely ending. Andrew is the one who deserved to die. Plus then we would not have had to suffer through his smugness on the last season of Angel.
love the shoes comment g brilliantly written as always
